We are writing to you on behalf of the taxpayers of Illinois and the tens of thousands of supporters of Taxpayers United of America, asking you to step aside as Speaker of the Illinois House.
Under your decades of control of the Illinois House, our beloved state has followed a downward spiral that is driving taxpayers to states with more prosperous economies and lower tax burdens.
Illinois, sadly, ranks #1 among the states for residents fleeing due to over-taxation. You’ve supported every state income tax increase since 1981, including the economically crippling 67 percent income tax increase approved in 2011.
We are also #1 in the country for highest property taxes. You’ve voted for every property tax increase approved by the General Assembly since 1983. People are being driven out of their homes to prop up a state government resistant to charting a wiser financial future.
Illinois is also #1 in the country for unfunded pension liabilities. Do you recall being a part of the Illinois Constitutional Convention that put special interests above those of every taxpayer in the state, creating an impenetrable protection racket for those that keep you in power?
Your cronies killed the Tax Accountability Amendment in 1990, signed by 513,000 Illinois taxpayers. The Amendment would have mandated a supermajority (60%) vote in the General Assembly to increase state taxes. 513,000 remains the largest number of signatures gathered for an Illinois tax limitation amendment, but you did not, and have not, stood up for Illinois’ taxpayers.
It’s no wonder that beginning in 1983, you’ve failed all 16 of our biennial non-partisan tax surveys of the Illinois General Assembly.
As Speaker of the Illinois House, you have a responsibility to the entire state, not just your district. Year after year, you have leveraged your power to get reelected at the expense of Illinois’ hard-working taxpayers. If you have any conscience or sense of responsibility to your entire constituency, you will step aside from the role of Speaker. Illinoisans need a Speaker who put constituents over cronies.
On behalf of the undersigned, and countless other taxpayers in need of tax relief,
Jim Tobin, President, Taxpayers United of America
