Proposed Chicago Traffic Speed Cameras To Protect Government Employee Pensions, Not Children

Chicago–The plan by the City of Chicago to install automated speed cameras in locations covering nearly half the city have nothing to do with protecting school children, but, rather, will be used to protect and bolster the lavish, gold-plated pensions of retired city government employees, according to the president of Taxpayers United of Illinois (TUA).

“On Wednesday, the State Senate approved this expansion of cameras in Chicago by a 32-24 vote, and now the legislation goes to the State House,” said Jim Tobin, TUA President. “Senate President John Cullerton (D-6, Chicago) helped his Democratic buddy, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D), by pushing this legislation through the Senate, and now Chicago Machine Boss and House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-22, Chicago) will attempt to shepherd SB965 through the Illinois House.”

“This expansion of speed cameras has nothing to do with protecting school children,” said Tobin. “If the purpose were school safety, then the automatic speed cameras would be limited to school speed zones and cover no more than 10 percent of city streets. This is a blatant, cynical attempt to pour millions of dollars into city coffers at the expense of Chicago drivers to benefit greedy bureaucrats and city employees.”

“I urge Chicago Taxpayers to contact their State Representatives and urge them to vote against SB965 passed by the Illinois Senate.”

Hearing Against Illinois Tollway Authority Postponed Until Monday October 31st

CHICAGO–Circuit Court Judge Rita M. Novak has postponed the hearing for a restraining order against the Ill. Tollway Authority and Electronic Transaction Consultants Corporation, a Texas corporation.
The motion, filed by Taxpayers United of America, was originally scheduled to be heard on Oct. 26, 2011, but will now take place on Monday, October 31, 2011, at 11:15 a.m. in Room 2402 of the Richard J. Daley Center, 50 West Washington Street. The restraining order is seeking to prevent the 90% toll tax increase from taking effect on Jan. 1, 2012.

The lawsuit is asking the Court to certify the case as a class action on behalf of all tollway users. TUA will ask the court to enforce the original intent of the tollway legislation and end the Illinois tollway system. If the Court allows the temporary restraining order, it will then be asked to consider an injunction to stop the toll increase.

Taxpayers United of America Seeking Plaintiffs in Suit Against Illinois Tollway Authority

CHICAGO–Taxpayers United of America is going to court to seek a temporary restraining order against the Illinois Tollway Authority to prevent the unconscionable, 90 percent hike in tollway taxes that are due to take effect January, 2012. Our efforts will be helped greatly if you would agree to join as a plaintiff.
The tollways were set up by legislators to be built and then converted to freeways when they were paid off in 1973. Rather than following the legislative intent, the Tollway Authority has run wild and has self-perpetuated itself by building more and more tollways, and now even plans to convert a free highway to a tollway.
While the middle-class is getting squeezed by this recession, tollway administrators are raking in the big bucks as they perpetuate their jobs!

We must unite and show the tollway administrators and their politically-connected contractors that we won’t put up with this any longer.
Playing an active role and becoming a plaintiff does not mean you will accrue costs. All of the costs are being borne by our organization.
Please help us stop this out-of-control authority by joining on as a plaintiff. If you are interested, send us an email with your name, address and your most frequented tollway. If you have any questions, please call the number listed above for further information. Thanks!
